Why Sheepskin?

Sheepskin Slippers make up some of our biggest selling styles, but why are they so popular? Well, the answer’s in the sheepskin itself. The natural properties of sheepskin make it the ideal material for a slipper lining.

It’s Thermostatic, which means it has a natural temperature control. Sheepskin is made up of hollow, breathable fibres which wick moisture away, ensuring your feet stay dry and cool when you’re hot. When you’re too cold, these same fibres insulate;they capture the heat released by your body, and use it to keep you warm and cosy.

Sheepskin also contains Lanolin, which has antibacterial qualities. This makes the Sheepskin naturally resistant to dirt and bacterial growth, meaning no smelly slippers. Sheepskin products are also hypoallergenic; they naturally repel dust and mildew, making them a great fit, even for allergy sufferers.

And most importantly, sheepskin is incredibly comfortable; there’s a feeling when you put on a pair of Sheepskin slippers which is completely unique.

Unfortunately, because sheepskin is so popular, many companies pass off man-made polyester as sheepskin. Polyester doesn’t offer the same unique benefits as genuine sheepskin, because the plastic fibres aren’t breathable and will make your feet sweat, and the material won’t contain the lanolin which is unique to authentic sheepskin.

Thankfully, with the slipper shop, you can shop confidently in the knowledge that we offer genuine sheepskin products bought directly from the manufacturer.

How to care for your sheepskin slippers

If you've taken the plunge, and bought yourself a pair of luxuriously soft sheepskin slippers, you’ll need to know how to keep them clean and looking their best. Sheepskin slippers usually have a suede or suede effect outer. This suede outer should be protected in order to avoid stains, and keep your slippers looking fresh and clean.

Protecting the suede outer of your slippers:

Use a suede brush to remove any dirt or dust

Spray the suede outer with protector spray, keeping the can around 20 cm from the slippers. You don’t need to spray the Sheepskin lining, but don’t worry if you do, the spray won’t damage it.

Leave to dry for 10 minutes then spray with a second coat.

Your slippers now have an invisible protective layer which will help repel liquids and stains.

If you do spill anything on your slippers after you’ve protected them, rinse them off with a little clean water. The protective coating will allow the water to wash off the dirt without affecting the slipper. You should then re-spray your slippers to ensure maximum protection. (Don’t wipe them as this can remove the protective barrier, and allow the material underneath to stain.)

For existing marks, we suggest using a suede cleaner:

Brush off dry dirt with a suede brush

Dampen the brush and add a few drops of cleaning solution

Brush the slippers in a circular motion, covering all of the suede

Wipe off any excess foam with a clean, dry cloth

Leave to dry naturally, then spray with a protector.
